Born on June 23: Conductor James Levine and composer Carl Reinecke

He is currently the music director of the Metropolitan Opera and of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Levine’s first performance conducting the Metropolitan Opera was on June 5, 1971, and as of July 2009 he has conducted more than 2,456 Met performances.] In 1997, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.

Carl Heinrich Carsten Reinecke (June 23, 1824 – March 10, 1910) was a German composer, conductor, and pianist.
in 1846, he was appointed as Court Pianist for Christian VIII in Copenhagen.
In 1851 he became a professor at the Cologne Conservatory. In following years he was the musical director at Barmen, and the academic, musical director and conductor of the Singakademie at Breslau.
He served as a teacher for 35 years, until 1902. His students included Edvard Grieg, Leoš Janáček, Isaac Albéniz and Max Bruch, among many others.
At the age of 80, Reinecke recorded a piano roll for the Welte-Mignon company.
